The Personality
Personality: Essie is a well-mannered horse... Once you get to know her. She's got a mischievous and stubborn streak, and tends to test strangers, which doesn't always mix that well. She's not malevolent, though - rather the contrary. She once kicked a vet because he was touching up her private parts, and when she realized it, the mare turned around and tried to cuddle up to the poor man. She's a cuddler, at heart, and doesn't always realize her own weight. She's clever enough to realize when to keep her distance, though, and while she pushes, she seldom crosses the boundaries.

Not in hand, anyway, nor often under the saddle, though she likes to buck when she starts to canter, the first time, maybe the second too. The pasture's hers - she doesn't particularly want to share, and she's none too inclined to get back in early. And that's by her clock, not yours. Then again, just wait until twilight and she'll be jumping to get inside. She's not really fond of crickets and other insects, and frogs tend to scare the living daylights out of her. She's also rather sensitive: not only does she take on the moods of her handler/rider, she responds fairly fast as well. There's seldom a need to kick her forwards, a nudge will do. And she punishes those she feels act far too roughly. Again, not mean, just... Steadfast. And un-moving, if in hand.
Caution Around: Tends to buck the first (and/or second) time she transitions into a canter, crickets, swarms of insects, frogs.

The History
Basic History: Not much is known about Essi's first few years, though it's a safe bet she was raised on a farm of some sort: heavy traffic, cattle etc. doesn't make her bat an eye. She was broken in a little roughly, but then trained well enough, if not extensively - she's still really sensitive for small cues. Likely, she was used as broodmare for a while, before Kit's father bought her as a bribe present for his young son. She was trained at a semi-professional stable for two months before he gave her to Kit, and the boy was thoroughly enamored with her. After another month or so, so was Essi with the boy, and since then she looks out for him. It was with some trial and error that they found the right way of communicating, but she's been with him ever since.
