Leander grinned at the sorrel mare, groomed and now standing patiently, her lead rope looped around one of the shafts of his new acquisition - A country cart, two-wheeled and much smaller than the wagonette he'd had stowed away in the hay barn before. Now, they were situated outside of the hay barn, Leander having dragged the cart out before he'd walked Lenore over. He'd finished grooming the mare, and her golden coat gleamed.
Leander walked back into the shade of the hay barn, tugging the canvas drop cloth away from where it covered Lenore's driving tack. Picking up the mare's gig saddle and breastplate, he trudged back outside, setting them on the cart for a moment before returning inside for the rest. Once he had transported everything outside, he moved through the motions of harnessing Lenore, a task that went quicker for the practice. Finally, he had the mare standing between the shafts and completely ready to take off. All that was left was to collect the dogs. A whistle got Akamu bounding over from where he'd been lounging in the shade, his leash flapping behind. Kayi wasn't far behind, trotting cautiously until she was standing near Leander, her tail wagging softly behind her. One after the other, he picked them up, setting both into the front with him. Sure, there was the back space, but with the open gates and the fact that he couldn't see them, Leander wasn't sure if he wanted the dogs behind him. No, there was plenty of space on the front seat. Akamu settled on the floorboards, while Kayi curled up on the seat, in the middle of course.
After unbuckling the mare's halter and buckling it around one of the wooden slats of the cart, for accessibility should he need it. He kept a hand on the lines as he walked back to the cart and boosted himself into the seat, shoving Kayi over and then taking his seat, looping the lines so they sat neatly before he called out, "Lenore, walk." He guided the mare into a smooth, wide turn back towards the main road leading out of the academy. He wasn't planning on making the mare trot today, perhaps a little bit on the return, but they would work up to that.
After a good amount of ambling along the roads, the group reached the fairgrounds, which the Academy had a standing agreement with. They got use of two of the yards for any horses that students or teachers chose to ride to the town, via the trail or the road, as well as having access to a couple of covered hitching posts, with access to water and a few bales of hay. Leander had Lenore halt and then jumped to the ground. He clipped on Lenore's halter over her bridle, then led her to the hitching post, throwing a glance into the trough to note that the water looked relatively clean and fresh. After unhitching the mare from the cart, he backed the cart away and then set it on the ground. Akamu jumped to the ground, while Kayi waited to be lifted down. Leaving Lenore to her water, Leander took the two dogs' leashes and walked away from the grounds.
When they reached to the reserve, Leander grinned, unclipping Akamu's lead and giving Kayi more slack in her long-line, to account for the fact that the Aussie couldn't find her way around too well. However, he needn't have worried, as he started walking, Kayi tailed behind Akamu, following the collie closely.
