Ráhel walked into her chemistry classroom, looking around and making sure that none of the wall decorations had come down. Since she had two classes in the science wing, she’d asked that she just teach both in the same room, so physics and chemistry posters intermingled along the walls, although a large periodic table took center stage, just under the clock at the back of the room. In a back corner, too, was her desk, which Ráhel walked to then, setting down her backpack next to it and pulling out the thermos of coffee that she’d prepared.
After taking a sip, she set it down, then picked up the box of cubes that she’d prepared earlier in the week. She carried that back up front, to the rectangular table that sat in front of the whiteboard. There, she waited for the students to come in, greeting them, then asking them to pair up, two per trapezoidal table, for the activity that they would start class with. She hoped that starting the class with an activity would get everyone interested, and at least this one led to their first chapter of the year: Thermodynamics. Just in a roundabout way, without starting with a lecture on the first day.

Seth moved the denim backpack up his shoulder as he made his way from one class to the next and a smile on his face as he entered the chemistry classroom. "Good morning." He greeted the teacher as he nodded to the instructions and walked over to sit at one of the tables. He hadn't made any enemies the year before, so there wasn't anyone on campus that he wouldn't want to work with.
He pulled the new blue binder and pencil case from his bag and pulled out the pens that he wanted to use that day, making sure that he wasn't taking up all of the double table, as he didn't want to make it look like he didn't want company. Opening the binder, he dated the top of the first page, just so that part was done for when the class started; already keen to know what they might be learning about that day and if they were going to make anything explode - hey, he always lived in hope.
Seth looked up with a smile as he caught a movement out of the corner of his eye and watched someone approaching the table he was sitting at.

Jessa had spent that morning, the first morning of classes, making sure that her color coded notebooks were all ready – The ones she’d need today in her backpack, the ones she didn’t need in a neat row in the shelf by her desk. She added a bottle of water to the side pocket, made sure that she had all of the colored pens that she always used, and then left her bedroom, calling out to Kirra and Pan as she left, “Be good, guys!”
She moved through the first class of the day as if on autopilot, and before too long she was on her way to the Chemistry classroom. There, the teacher was greeting them at the door, and Jessa smiled, “Good morning!” She stepped into the classroom and glanced around, trying to decide where she wanted to sit. There was only one boy here already, she knew him from around but didn’t know if she’d ever spoken to him. Shrugging, she walked over to him, smiling at him and speaking, “Hey.” She put down her backpack and sat down, not giving him a chance to say no now – She wasn’t going to start bouncing around aimlessly, even with nobody there to see her. He didn’t seem to be too mean, though, in the other classes she’d seen him in.
