On Amber's ride with Rapunzel that day, Amber started wondering what her future would hold. It was hard to imagine a future without her brother in it, but she knew that he wasn't going to be in it now. Her mother was not either, not that she wanted her mother in her future at all. Amber hoped that she would not turn out to be anything like her mother. She did want to be somewhat like her brother, or like one side of him, because the other side of him she really hoped that she would not be anything like. The same was true of her father, except to a lesser extent.
Amber wondered if her father would be in her future and she was not sure if she wanted him in it or not but she feared that something might happen to him. He might end up in prison or he might get sick and die, like the aunt that her mother lived with after the rest of her family died in a tornado, or he might get murdered or die in an accident or a natural disaster. She could also die of any of those things, and then there were the horses. Maybe it was best to imagine a future in which everyone who was alive now was still alive. Would her father be in it? Maybe he would because he had cut the rest of his family, which Amber knew hardly anything about, off and Amber did not want to do that.
Amber wondered if Athena would be in her future and she hoped that that would be the case. She feared that that would be an unlikely thing to wish for, as she looked down at the rag, in her hand, and the saddle that she was supposed to be cleaning and realized that she had not been doing that.
