Oliver listened intently as Ms Markey spoke. He was a bit disappointed when it sound like she would only be teaching them the rough basics. The only other equestrian class he took that could be class as western was trail, which meant that they probably wouldn't branch into anything like reining or barrel racing. He shook the thought off though as he tuned back into what was being said. He nodded as she spoke about the fact that she wanted to see or hear about them practising between classes, the homework things suddenly making sense.
Before he gave Ollie the cue to step forward, he thought about his position in the saddle, making sure that his ears, shoulders, hips and heels were in a nice straight line, the ball of his foot was balanced lightly on the iron, his ankle flexed and heel down. Happy with his position, he pressed his calf muscles against the gelding's sides and sat back as the gelding jogged forward. "Easy." He breathed as he pushed his seat-bones into the saddle and closed his hands on the reins as he asked the gelding to slow down.
Once the spotted horse had settled back into a walk, he asked the gelding to move out to the track. They walked a few laps, he then worked the gelding in figure eights and then spirals. They then reversed direction and repeated the exercise. He then repeated it again at the trot, on both reins, and then brought the lanky gelding back to a walk. He just needed to remember not to post at the trot, which he remembered after a slight lapse of his memory and a couple of posts.
As he worked the gelding, he thought over what they had learning with their previous teacher. "We really hadn't done a lot more than saddling, mounting and dismounting, our position in the saddle and how to ask them to move forward and stop." He said with a slight shrug.
