"Come on old man." Bruce said as he led Boss in from the pasture and tied him loosely to the hitching rail before he went inside the barn and brought out the gelding's gear and spent the next half an hour grooming and tacking the gelding up.
Once his all-purpose boots were in place, the man swung himself into the saddle. "I was thinking the bay trail would be the best place to take you to today." He told the Stationbred as he squeezed the flaxen chestnut forward and they headed toward the Rocky Ridge Trails and he felt himself relax as they entered the trees.
Forgetting all about arena etiquette, Bruce let the reins slip through his fingers until he was holding them by the billet and allowed the gelding to plod along, and pretty much pick their speed.
While he would have liked to have gone home for the vacation, but he was enjoying the summer too much to fly to New Zealand for the winter, and anyway, the best snow would hit until it was time to return home, so he'd miss the best of the ski season anyway, which meant he was better to just be where he was. Also it would have made running a clinic tricky if he hadn't been here.
All it took was for Boss to shake from the tip of his nose to the end of his tail to stop Bruce's daydreams and get him to concentrate on the trail ahead of him. With a laugh, he noticed that they had missed their turn-off and he had the gelding turn around and they headed back to where they were supposed to join a new path.
