The rain had never bothered Anna, so it had not deterred her from making a trip into town. It seemed to be the best plan, since Benedict's Arena would, undoubtedly, be nuts, so she'd decided not to ride Essie. Instead, she'd take the trip to her favorite store downtown: Portable Magic. Most days, the library was able to fulfill her desire to be among the stacks, but there was something about bookstores, especially small, independent bookstores, that had always enchanted her. So she'd spend her day at Portable Magic, and grab a snack from the coffee shop before she returned to the school.
Having donned her rain gear, Anna caught the bus into town, grateful that it wasn't a long walk from the bus stop to the bookstore. Bustling into the store, she closed the door quickly behind her, and shed her rain coat to hang on the coat rack, sticking her umbrella into its respective holder. Taking a moment to warm up, she assessed the scene happily. The store was quiet, and the wall of old windows that usually allowed sun in gave those inside the store a fantastic view of the storm was angrily raging outside. Water streamed down the windows, distorting the activity outside of the store and blurring the colors.
Anna's perusal of the stacks was no brief process, and she always inspected them in order, working along them and taking note of interesting books and their authors in a little notebook she carried with her. Having compiled a rather long list, she backtracked, finding Franny and Zooey and plucking the small paperback from the shelf. She'd read some of Salinger's work before, and had enjoyed it, and she'd heard good things about this book. Taking the book to the register, she bought it, along with a new tin of book darts, and proceeded up the squeaky stairs to the second floor of the store.
She immediately sat in her favorite chair, a hunter green armchair that faced a window, and opened her new book, taking out a pen for her occasional delicate annotation. "Though brilliantly sunny, Saturday morning was overcoat weather again...."
