Fitz always looked forward to his dressage schooling days with Corvus. Though many other eventers preferred the most thrilling phases, Fitz was the most talented, and therefore the happiest, in dressage. He tried to balance his schooling between the three phases to keep Corvus balanced, and today, blessedly, was a dressage day.
After grooming Corvus, he tacked him up in his dressage gear and led the gelding out to the dressage arena. Mounting up, he patted the gelding and began to warm up at the walk, trot, and then canter, asking Corvus for the medium and then extension of each gait. He then worked some circles, 20 meter and then 10 meter to ensure that the gelding was properly warmed up. Corvus, like usual, was rather heavy, and Fitz tried to pick him up, applying more leg and pressure on the reins. He was already heavier handed than he would be with any other horse, and it was tough to pick Corvus up without him taking the chance to lean into the bit more.
When Corvus was light, he collected his trot and sat to it, deepening his seat from C to A. Once he reached A, he extended the trot, but continued to sit to it, pleased when Corvus responded with a springy, active trot. The gelding was often nasty, but did cooperate once in a while.
