Khalid walked down to the barn phone in hand. His mare was supposed to arrive after a few delays getting all her papers approved. As he approached the trailer, he could feel vibrations from the bass and muffled rap. How anyone classified it as music was beyond him.
The driver opened the door with a venomous countenance that made Khalid seriously reconsider coming all the way out here. The driver muttered a question Khalid could barely understand. The lack of enunciation and different accent left the boy struggling to comprehend the string of sounds. That and the strong odor of cigarette smoke almost had him gagging.
"I'm expecting a horse, um a grey Arabian mare."
The man grunted and reached across to the passenger seat to get the clipboard. A ballpoint pen was crudely taped to a string tied to the clipboard, and a tear in the blue tape suggested that the pen had snagged on something once or twice. Grudgingly, the boy took the clipboard and signed his name.
"I can unload her myself."
The boy handed the clipboard back to the driver and walked around to undo the latch on the trailer. He really didn't want his mare to be around that guy any longer than absolutely necessary. The driver insisted on letting the back of the trailer down himself and dropped it to the pavement. Khalid cringed and glanced back at the barns. He hoped none of the horses would freak out because someone didn't know how important it was to let the back down slowly. A minute later and Sarab was blinking in the light and breathing in fresh air. The smaller Arabian looked to be a much better size for Khalid than his big Warmblood, but the two horses had different purposes. He gave her a bit of time to orient herself and have her hooves on solid ground.
