Grace stood just inside the doorway and looked around her classroom one last time. The wall she was facing had been left blank, as she projected her PowerPoints onto it. Her collection of flags was mounted on the left wall, one from every country she had set foot in. Below that was a huge world map that stretched almost from wall to wall. The students’ desks had been arranged into two groups, facing each other and separated by an aisle down the middle, leading straight to the PowerPoint wall. Grace’s desk was positioned in the near right corner of the room, a few personal touches already present. Mostly a corkboard to the right of her chair that housed a collage of her family. Most noticeably, to Grace at least, was the absence of her and any man that might prompt students to ask if it was her significant other.
Physically shaking herself from those reflections, she moved to make sure her projector was in the right position. Not too close, not too far. Then, the bell rang, and Grace felt a rush of excitement. She stood at her door, meeting each student with a smile and a word or two of greeting.
Once the late bell had rang, Grace picked up her roster. “Good morning everyone. My name is Ms. Ackerman. As I call role, please inform me if you have a preferred name, or if I butcher the pronunciation.” She said warmly. After meeting so many people of varied nationalities, she generally didn’t mispronounce names, but you could never be sure. Clearing her throat, she began. When all necessary corrections had been committed to memory-Grace was rather good at that-the lesson began. A flip of a light switch and a press a key launched the desired slides onto the wall. “Alright. You each have in front of you a rather large sheet of paper. I'd like for you to put your history on it. As much or as little as you want. You can write, draw, or even speak it, though if you could keep to under two minutes, that would be great. I won't answer any clarifying questions, but don't worry, it's not graded." She said in an authoritative but warm voice. Her instructions were currently on the PowerPoint wall as well. She was curious to see how each of her students thought of history.
