Judge, Jury and Executioner

[Monique Chambers]

Monique walked into her room, smiling as she looked around at the beanbags scattered over the main part of the room. She placed her bag down on her desk and then walked to the desks that formed a U shape around the edges of the room - for those of the students who would rather sit at a desk then be on the floor. She carried a desk to the front of the room and then placed a chair behind the desk and one on either side - all facing the centre of the room. She then grabbed her white board markers and wrote:Trial of... on the board in her cursive print.

Today the class was going to run a mock trial And to start off, they needed to work out who they were going to put onto trail. Sitting at her table, Monique took out a stack of small squares of paper and placed it on her desk. She had decided that the easiest way to do this would be to give each student two pieces of paper, they write their ideas down, fold them up, all the paper would be placed into a hat and Monique would pull them out, then one of the students would be that "character" and they would be put onto trial.

Picking up the paper, Monique walked over to stand by the door and handed each student who entered two pieces of paper. Once the tardy bell sounded, the woman walked to the front centre of the room - so that she was standing in front of the judge's box. "Welcome. You might all be wondering why you are holding two bits of paper. Today we are going to put someone on trial, who it is and why they are there is up to all of you." She walked over and reached behind the whiteboard and pulled out a tophat. "On one piece of paper, you will right down the name of a character; from a fairy tale, a movie, comics even. And on the other, you will write down an idea for why someone might be on trial." She arched an eyebrow as she looked over the students. "Do remember this is a classroom, so please keep things clean."

[Elizabeth Toman]

Libby walked into the drama class, taking the papers that were offered to her. She plonked herself down on a dark pink beanbag that had yellow, gold, silver and blue butterflies embroidered all over it. She allowed herself to sink into the bag as she turned the papers over in her hands and arched an unimpressed eyebrow at the fact that they were bother blank.

She watched as the other students arrived in dribs and drabs, noting the cheerleaders, and sat up a little as the teacher walked to the front centre and introduced them to what they would be doing. During her homeschooling, she'd done a mock trail, but it hadn't been that interesting as there was only her, so this should be fun at least. Grabbing a purple glittery pen out of her back she wrote Spiderman on one paper and Swinging in Public in the other. She knew that her ideas went together, but either would be amusing to use with another idea.

As the woman walked around with her top hat, Libby folded her papers in half, then in half again, and dropped them into the hat. She pulled her folder out of her bag and dated the first page, then wrote The trial of.. across the top, eager to get going. Ms Chambers hadn't mentioned how lawyers and the judge were going to be selected, but she'd just wait and see. Maybe the people who's suggestions were pulled out would work as the prosecuting and defending lawyers.

[Jayne Doe]

Jayne walked into the classroom that they used for Drama and accepted the two proffered pieces of paper before walking over and surveying the classroom. Taking off the heavy wool jacket that she was wearing she dropped down into a blue bean bag with clouds painted all over it. She knew that Ms Chambers' daughter had made a lot of the beanbags when she had been living on campus, and she guessed that this was part of her hard work. The girl brushed down the purple jeans she was wearing and her indian style shirt.

She pulled her folder out of her bag, along with a pencil case that held all the pens that she didn't use for other classes and looked at the board. "Trial of... whom?" She questioned, she wondered if they were going to put their classmates on trial for some outlandish crimes.

She settled back on the bean bag as the other students began arriving and the Ms Chambers took charge of the class. On one paper, Jayne wrote Tom Thumb and on the other she wrote Theft She then folded them into a small square and dropped them into the hat that the teacher was carrying around. She was very interested to see how this would pan out.

    Upon entering the drama room, Kate quickly found her beanbag chair of choice for the day - this time navy with silver stars. She sort of went through phases with the beanbags, but the stars were sticking, and she'd been sitting in that one for a while now. Once seated, she bent over, with a little effort, since she'd sunken into the chair, to get her notebook out of her book bag along with a pen. Placing the slips of paper she'd received on top of the notebook so that she could write comfortably, Kate waited for the class to begin. 

    After the assignment had been explained, Kate paused to think. It seemed like it would be fun, and though it may have been more daunting in another class, she was sure that it would be amusing here. After a few minutes of through, she wrote Cinderella on one slip and littering on the other. The two sort of matched up, but both would also be fine on their own, and she was sure that whatever match was made would prove so be delightful.

    When Ms. Chambers came around with a hat for them, Kate dropped in her ideas and then copied down what was on the board in her notebook so that she'd be ready for whatever they were doing.

Jason met Ms. Chambers at the door with a big smile; he was always excited to go to theater class. He accepted the slips of paper, turning them over as he walked in. Giving a half-shrug, Jason eyed the beanbags that were not yet taken. He spotted one covered with all sorts of colored squares. As he got closer, he saw that some of them were part of the original fabric cover, while some were patches that had been sown on with thick black thread. It was unclear whether they were for design or actually served a purpose, but it didn't matter to Jason. He plopped into it anyway, setting his bag to the side.

As Ms. Chambers explained the activity for the day, Jason grinned, ideas sprouting in his head. He had done a few mock trials in his time, all of them serious. He had a feeling that this one would be different. He tilted his head to the side as he considered his choices. Movies, books, myths, and fairy tales flickered through his mind. He quickly narrowed it down to Greek myths, as those characters were more well known and many of them could very well be tried for myriad 'crimes'. But which to choose?

Jason finally came to a conclusion, and one slip of paper, he wrote Theseus. He ran through the basic plotline of that particular myth, and grabbed the second piece of paper. Here, he wrote Forgetfulness. This way, it could be applied to any character, not just the one. He put his choices into the hat and waited excitedly to see who was going to be tried for what.

[Thomas Oliver]

Tommy strolled into the drama class as though he had not a care in the world, and that was pretty much how he felt that day. He took the papers the teacher offered with a charming smile and a theatrical, sweeping bow, and then stood in the doorway for a moment as he took in the classroom. He obviously wasn't the first to arrive, but more importantly, he also wasn't the last. Walking across the room, he sat down in a black beanbag that was covered in gold stars, made him think of a wizard's hat that you'd find in a store for Halloween. He then pulled out the hard-covered spiral notebook he used for the class.

As the teacher began explaining that day's topic, the freshman grinned mischievously and arched both eyebrows. He then took a black pen out of his bag, balanced the notebook on his knee and on one piece he wrote Zeus on the other, he wrote, murder. Folding them up, he waited for the woman to walk around with her hat and he deposited both of a squares into the hat. He then waited to see what would come of the whole thing. His two suggestions fitted together perfectly, but it would be funny if his person was pulled out along with something funny.

[Othello Buskirk]

Othello walked slowly down the hallway, careful not to bump into anyone, and then into the classroom he was due in. He jumped when he saw the teacher standing at the door and gave a nervous smile as he accepted the small bit of paper. He then looked around the room and walked over to sit down on a plain blue beanbag. This had to be his favourite classroom, there was just something about it that made him feel relaxed. The room itself didn't see as hot and stuffy as the others.

He sat up as Ms Chambers began to speak and he leaned forward as he listened to the plans for that day; a mock trial sounded like it could be fun, and it sounded even better when she said that it would be fictional characters up on the stand, at least this way it couldn't be made personal.

He pulled his folder out of his bag and used it to rest on as he tapped a blue pen against the folder in thought. He frowned as he tried to think of what to write down until he finally gave a nod. On the first sheet, he wrote Prince Charming and on the other he wrote Dancing. He knew that the crime was a bit out there, but from how Ms Chambers made it sound, it was all going to be in good fun, so why not charge someone for dancing?

Blythe pulled her jacket closer around her body, even as she walked through the halls. It was cold! Why in the world did people not just go to warm places, like home? She thought longingly of the mild winters they had in Santa Monica, but it was a fantasy. She was stuck here now, for better or for worse. She found the Theatre and Drama classroom easily and grinned at the teacher as she took the two pieces of paper that she was offered.

As she entered, she looked around for 'her' beanbag, a black one decorated in pink and silver shapes. Pulling it closer towards the centre of the room, she sat down, then pulled out her notebook to write on. After hearing what the plan was for the day, she nodded, not too pleased, but whatever. At least she knew a bit about it, her father had spoken about law suits that had attacked his firm at dinner a few times... Back when she had eaten dinner with them, anyway.

However, that had nothing here. She looked down at the papers and shrugged, then wrote down some silly ideas, one from a show and the other, just because. Or rather, it had been their joke, Morgan and hers. Her script on the two papers read Dr. House and For being a toaster. It'd be interesting to put them on trial for, if it did get picked. Blythe folded the two papers, then dropped them into the hat when the teacher came around.

Kennedy smiled as she made her way into the classroom and sat down in her chosen seat. She was looking forwards to this class and had been since she'd first signed up for classes. It was sure to be fun, and she couldn't wait to get started! Upon hearing the teacher's instructions, her smile widened and she eagerly leaned forwards in her desk, glancing at the other students as she thought about what she wanted to write on her two pieces of paper. It was so hard because there was so many things she could put down! She wondered briefly what the other students were writing, then shook her head. It was none of her concern.

She tapped her pencil on the paper as she thought, then snapped her fingers when it hit her. Pulling the paper near her, she leaned over her desk. On one paper she scribbled out in her slanted cursive handwriting 'Batman' and on the other paper she wrote 'For horse theft.'
She laughed to herself as she folded the papers and dropped them into the hat that the teacher carried, then settled back to wait for everyone else to finish and the real fun of the class to start.

[Danielle Green]

Danielle walked down to the Theatre and Drama room promptly entered it. She loved this class as she did many others. She plonked down on a light green beanbag with little flowers all over it. Even though Danny wasn’t a fan of flowery things, she didn’t have a problem as she was sitting in a bean bag chair for a class, which in and of itself was great. She pulled out her notebook and sat them on it to provide a sturdy place to write. Taking a few seconds to think about what she wanted to write down she finally decided. With a blue pen the girl wrote Captain Jack Sparrow and sat the piece off to the side.

Starting the next she wrote quickly, Treason. Danny folded her two pieces of paper in half and then sat back in her bean bag. At this point she took a long look around the room. Trying to decide if she had seen most of these people before, which she had, but some names didn’t come to her. Some of her classmates were in a few other classes as well, but she never really listened well enough to other students introducing themselves to know names, most of the time anyways.

Vervain brushed her hair from her hooded head as she walked down the hallway, her crimson bangs deciding today was the day to obscure her vision. This morning she had been both reluctant and in a hurry to get out of the dorm room-- reluctant because it meant waking up and getting ready, and in a hurry so she would have more time with Casper. Well, and to limit the time she had to spend with her roommate, Danielle.

As she entered the classroom she efficiently noted the unique seating, the teacher, and she even skimmed over the people that would be in this class with her. Yay. Danielle was here. Without saying a word she took the two pieces of paper she had been meant to, and was even one of the few students to take a seat in a desk. She yearned to seat in a beanbag, but doing so would make her feel...vulnerable, in a sense. Like anything other than animals that implied fun would make her let down her guard.

She pulled out the pencil from her pocket that had began to stab her leg whenever she sat, and quickly wrote in her slanted cursive:

Gretchen trotted down the hall, knowing she was a bit late. She was relieved when she walked in the room to discover that she wasn't actually all that late. She smiled and greeted the teacher, feeling a little more relaxed. After taking the two pieces of paper and recieving instructions on what to do with them, she walked over to a beanbag and flopped down into it, plopping her bag on the floor beside her.

A person and something to be on trial for. Her immediate thought was to write down Loki fo destroying half of New York in the Avengers. That was the logical choice, but another part of her decided something else.

Taking the first piece of paper, she scribbed down 'Sherlock Holmes', and folded it in half.

For the second paper, she thought about how to word it for a moment, the wrote down, 'staging your own suicide'. She wondered if anyone even knew enough about Sherlock Holmes to get that reference, but it didn't matter to her. She folded the paper regardless and then stood up.

There were a few other papers in the hat the teacher had, Gretchen wondered what they might say on them as she put her own papers in. She supposed she would find out soon enough. She returned to her beanbag and waited for class to officially begin.

Once the tardi bell sounded, Monique closed her classroom door. She was seen by some students as being very laid back and slow to anger, but she also took her classes seriously, and having to open the door to enter would draw attention on the late-comer and their embarrassment from that alone should remind them not to so it again.

She then took the hat and shook it, waving one hand over it like a magician. "Right, drumroll please." She laughed as a number of the students beat out a drumroll on their knees, books or the floor. The woman pulled two pieces of paper. She had to keep returning one until she had a crime. "Okay ladies and gentlemen, on trial today we have the one and only Batman, I ask for the person who wrote him down to come up and sit in the chair to my right. He is here on charge for... Heresy, the owner of that idea gets to come up and be the prosecuting lawyer. Poor Batman is defending himself, or herself as the case may be." As they were two completely different sets of handwriting, it was obvious that it wasn't the same person - now that, would have been a laugh.

She took the seat in the chair in the middle. "I'm going to play the judge, tough it's the jury that you have to convince of your innocence. Batman, you may call upon any witnesses you want, the same goes for the prosecutor. I could assign you jobs like clerk and actually assign a jury, but that would wipe away your witnesses." She glanced around the class. "Let's get to it then. Batman, you have been brought before this court on a charge of heresy, how do you plead?" She paused for the reply. "Prosecutor, your first witness please."

[Elizabeth Toman]

Libby rolled her eyes at Ms Chambers' theatrics, though she joined in with the drumroll. She was a little put out that one of her ideas hadn't been chosen, but there was no way she could fault the woman for it as she had pulled them, at random, out of a hat.

She sat back in her beanbag as she opened her notebook, titled the page MOCK TRAIL, then under that wrote: The trial of Bat(wo)man, charged with Heresy. A smile curved on her lips as their teacher explained how things would work. She knew that with her attitude, she would make a better witness called by the prosecutor, but she could try and defend Batman as well, try being the operative word.

She narrowed her eyes as she watched the people at the front of the room, keen to get it all started. As she knew that Batman's opening statement would at least give them some background of what she had been doing the night of being accused with such a crime, and that - along with the prosecutor's argument, would be what the witnesses would base their stories off. She then decided that she just didn't have it in her to defend anyone, so she hoped that she wasn't called as a witness for Batman.

[Jayne Doe]

When the teacher asked for a drumroll, Jayne leaned forward and drummed the beat out on the floor. She then decided that they should have a keyboard in the room for that exact reason. Surely there was at least one student in here who know how to use one to sound effect that were needed at time - of course, as long as whomever was standing behind the instrument didn't abuse their duty.

She settled back as the woman pulled a name from the hat and then a crime, the girl giggled at the crime, since Heretic was one of Batman's biggest foes. She sat back in her beanbag as she waited to hear the opening statements and for the first witness to be called forward by the prosecutor. She did find it a little unfair that Batman had to defend herself, as she was sure that someone could have play the defence lawyer.

Opening her notebook, she scrawled down the information she would need to remember later to write this up properly - as she assumed that's what Ms Chambers would want them to do - and held her pen poised, ready to write down exactly what was being said, pleased that she had the notebook she was holding for that exact reason.
