The Personality
Personality: Crisco is a unique horse. He has kept a lot of his personality traits from before being captured by the BLM, gelded, and adopted. He’s rather standoffish and would rather be left alone than be handed most of the time. In the pasture he can be very hard to catch and only Isaac can catch him within a reasonable time-frame without having to resort to using feed or treats to entice him to come up. Since he can be so hard to catch, he wears a breakaway halter constantly, and once his halter is grabbed, he usually will go willingly with whoever has caught him. Under-saddle, Crisco is a great riding horse. He’s intelligent and catches onto new things quite easily, though he has a stubborn streak a mile wide. He also isn’t too good at being pastured with groups of geldings and mares together, as he gets protective of the mares and herds them around while bullying the geldings, but pastured with only geldings he’s fine, and he’s good to ride in groups, etc…
Caution Around: Don’t pasture him with mares and geldings both. Also, he hates cats.
The History
Basic History: Crisco was born wild and ran as a wild Mustang until he was about five years old. When he was five he was captured by the BLM, gelded, and put up for adoption. Without a name, without ever having a brush taken to him, the palomino Mustang wasn’t very pretty, but something about him caught Isaac’s eye’s and he was adopted, named, and gentled down. Crisco didn’t take to saddle very well and for several months Isaac thought he’d have a future only as a saddle-bronc, but slowly the gelding settled on down and began accepting things as they were. Began accepting that his life was going to be drastically different from then on. He was slowly trained in both English and Western disciplines and over the years has proven to be a good riding horse, even with his few habits and quirks that have carried over from his time as a wild horse.
