Personality>>
HAPPY/COMPASSION Dante is usually quite the easy going, relaxed type. He is friendly and kind-hearted, especially towards the troubled and animals in need. He loves spending time in the shelter, simply giving attention to animals that have been there a while, especially the cats.
ANGER A long fuse defines Dante. Patient is a better word. It doesn't mean that he doesn't get angry, it simply means that the right buttons have to be pushed to get a reaction out of him.
HATRED Dante can hold a grudge, more to the people that he had cared about previously and that have hurt him. It won't be over the small things, that can be easily forgiven, but constantly lying and hurting him through their actions brings out a side of Dante that is rarely seen.
TRUST He doesn't trust easily, but when he does, he's a loyal friend. It's a big thing to call Dante a friend, because in his mind, he has a lot of acquaintances, but can count his friends on the fingers of one hand.
THE FACADE Now all these traits culminate into Dante, he puts it all behind a mask. The facade of a cold-hearted arsehole who has been burned too many times to allow himself to appear as himself in the real world.
Likes>> Reading- mostly the classics, and some modern day literature. History- Keen study of pre-1900 history, especially European history. Sleeping Late- Mostly because he has such early mornings, whenever he can sleep late, he grabs the opportunity with both hands and sleeps in, nothing being able to wake him. Cats- He was never raised around dogs, but his parents always had a cat or two around the house, and this has caused that Dante has never been without at least one cat. They are the best companions in the house. Rugby- He loves his rugby, and will always take the time to catch up on the latest log standings and matches. Of course, he supports Scotland, but nurses a soft spot for the Wallabies as well.
Dislikes>> Loud noises- He isn't big on fireworks or large crowds, but will brave it to watch a rugby match or a concert of a favourite musician. Liars- Thinks that compulsive liars are the scum of the earth. This is a more recent dislike (see history). Bad Hygiene- Self explanatory. Dante really is big on hygiene, not extreme, but just likes the feeling of being clean. Probably also the reason why he won't go camping without proper facilities. Alcohol- Has been drunk during his student years, he doesn't like it, but will drink the occasional glass of wine if it is called for. Insomnia- During highly stressful times, Dante is extremely prone to insomnia, managing an hour or two of sleep a night.
Fears>> Death. After various close encounters with his maker, Dante fears that one day, he won't be so lucky and meet an untimely end. His other fear is the sea. He was pulled into a rip tide and nearly drowned, but this hasn't extended to other bodies of water, merely the sea.
Hopes>> Become a principal at some point, but there is no rush. Also hopes that he will be able to master playing the piano at some point, but there never seems to be enough time in the day.
Secrets>> Once had feelings for a student who was younger than him, as he was starting his teaching career at 25. Girl was 15. Never went further than a couple of dates, but he was forced to resign after the school board found out. No more was spoken about it, and as he resigned, it doesn't appear on his references. He does regret it deeply however.
It’s the way I’m feeling I just can’t deny
Appearance>> EYES - Dante has dark brown eyes, soulful, but slightly skeptical as well. He's a critic, and although he wouldn't say anything to you, his eyes would hold enough criticism, if you can pick up on it. Every emotion happens with his eyes, even if he can put on a facade.
HAIR - Thick, gorgeously brown locks, though always kept at a reasonable length. The type of hair that wants you to run your fingers through it all the time. It's never really neat, as Dante is always running his hands through it, especially when he is concentrating really hard, which is often.
BUILD/FEATURES - Tall and skinny sums up the fact that Dante looks like a fox. He's just under six foot one tall, skinny, hardly even muscled. He doesn't even fall into the nerd catagory. He's just. Well, he's Dante.
DRESS CODE - For work, pin stripe suits with a neat tie, often not wearing the jacket, and rolling up his sleeves to be more comfortable. Suits are all well and dandy, but it's the fact that he wears a pair of Converse trainers with it that makes it so interesting. He does wear contacts, but can suffer from dry eyes, at which point he wears spectacles. Casual dress is simply jeans and t-shirts, always ironed and neat.
Markings>> Scar on his right palm, and on his chest where a tube was inserted to drain the fluid on his lungs. Another scar on his left ankle where it was operated to remove bone fragments. No tattoos or piercings.
But I’ve gotta let it go
Medical History>> Was admitted to hospital when he was 13 with pneumonia, suffered from a collapsed lung during this period. Took six weeks to recover. Broke his ankle at 17. Car accident when he was 23, suffered a mild concussion. Blood poisoning at 27 when he cut his palm on a rusty gate. Prone to flu during winter. Allergic to penicillin and bananas. Short sighted.
Criminal History>> No.
Full History>> Dante was born as the middle child of three children into the typical Scottish family. He has an older brother (by five years) and a younger sister (by ten years), and his parents had a penchant for interesting names. It probably stemmed from the fact that his father is a businessman/ freelance stage actor, mostly Shakespeare. His mother was a substitute teacher as a part time position, but stayed at home as a house wife. For ten long years, Dante was the youngest child that his mother doted on. Of course he would be. His parents struggled to conceive him, and from what his mother told him, he was a difficult birth as well.
At six, on a family holiday to the South of France, Dante was playing in the sea, not listening to his mother about safety, or staying close to where she was, and pulled into the sea by a rip tide. All he could really remember was struggling to see, and the roar of blood in his ears. The incident scared him enough to never go into the sea again. He will go to the beach and watch other people, but he likes being bound to land.
His little sister was born, and suddenly the attention was cut down, and at such a critical time too. He felt betrayed in a way, as if he was being cast aside. He grew quiet, but destructive, negative attention being better than no attention at all. His fifteen year old brother was too busy anyway, being a teenager, and the two of them never really had the strongest bond. It was the awkward middle child phase for him. Except it was a phase that nobody could really grow out of unless there was a death in the family. Dante could see that his younger sister, Lydia, was the new apple of his parent's eye, and so, he simply accepted the fact that his achievements were overlooked, and would always be.
When Dante was thirteen, he had spent too much time playing in the snow, and hadn't been dressed warmly enough. Being prone to illness, it didn't take long for his bronchitis to turn into pneumonia, and he was admitted into hospital immediately. The strain on his parents were evident, as his mother had to look after his sister and still see Dante in hospital. While he lay in the children's ward, he watched as mothers and often fathers stayed for hours with their children, or even overnight if they could, while Dante was alone most of the time, seeing his parents only during the extremely short visiting hours in the evening. During a visit that his parents could not attend, very early into the illness, Dante's lung collapsed, his other being filled with fluid. While doctor's struggled to get him stable in the operating room, his parents were fighting at home.
Weak, and fighting off the effects of the drugs, Dante awoke to find that there was no one there to comfort what was essentially a frightened boy. Time heals, and six weeks later, Dante was finally discharged from hospital, with strict instructions to spend another two weeks on bed rest. The two weeks he had, he caught up on schoolwork. He loved learning, and soon after, he begged his parents to send him to a boarding school in London that had every class that Dante had ever wanted to take. He was shut down quickly enough when he was shown his medical bill.
Fast forward four years, and seventeen year old Dante had thrown himself into his schoolwork, always coming in at the top of his class, excelling in every academic endeavor he could attend. His parents were forking out money for their darling little daughter to attend ballet classes, riding classes, art classes, music lessons, private tutors so that Lydia could excel in every aspect of her life. Dante loved his parents, but he loathed them at the same time. If it wasn't for a scholarship to the boarding school he wanted to attend, he would have given up a long time ago.
A fall down a flight of steps resulted in his breaking his ankle, and having to go under the knife, but this time he told his parents not to bother with wasting their time and his, with a visit they would rather not make. Eight week recovery, and it was graduation. Only his father attended, but it was better than nothing.
With a mind like Dante's, the world was at his feet, being able to study what he wanted. Instead, he chose teaching, because teaching others was more generous than he felt another profession would be. Full scholarship to Cambridge, and it was where he met his wife, Melanie.
His first position was at a secondary school, and it was during a rough period in his relationship with Melanie. The problem? The fact that he was attracted to a student. They met a few times after school, but there was this nagging guilt in the back of his mind throughout the whole thing. Sadly, the girl fell pregnant (not his) but she threatened and blackmailed, until her parents went to the school board. Dante resigned immediately and returned to Melanie.
Not long after, they were married in a quiet church wedding, and honeymooned by touring through Italy. It was also around this time that he broke off all contact with his parents. He couldn't have been happier, but his ability to trust had been dented by the two people who raised him. He saw his parents as frauds, liars and cheats. Time didn't heal this wound. Dante built his 'new' life with Melanie, moving to Chelsea to teach.
When Dante and Melanie celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary, little did he know that it was going to be the end of his bliss. She was diagnosed with cancer, and although the outcome was supposed to be good, Melanie got worse and worse. Two years later, Dante buried his wife, and succumbed to the grief. He packed up his life in England and moved to the States, receiving his Masters in Education at Stanford. He is currently busy with his PhD in English.
We found love in a hopeless place
Pet Name>> Django (DJ for short)
Registered Name>> n/a
Age>> 3
Gender>> Male (neutered)
Species>> Feline
Breed>> Turkish Van
Registry>> n/a -- Shelter
Personality>> Unlike most cats, especially ones that have been abused, DJ is a total cuddle bug. It doesn't matter what you are doing, DJ will always wrap himself around your legs, purring, seeking attention. He loves being scratched under his chin, and tickled along his back. Another thing that DJ loves is water, which is characteristic of the breed. No matter if it is a swimming pool, bath or shower, where there is water, there is DJ. As mostly an indoor cat, DJ is pampered beyond belief, lounging around on any sunny surface he can find.
History>> DJ's history before Dante is a sad one. He was bred by a backyard breeder, and bought by a family for their five year old daughter. Of course, once he outgrew the kitten stage, he was no longer cute and cuddly, and so became another pet. The care of DJ was left to the daughter, and it once his fur was matted and he was emaciated to being close to death, the parents finally realised and took DJ to a vet. They were able to save and rehabilitate DJ, and he was sent to the shelter when no adoptions came through for him. So, it was Dante's lucky day when he picked up the one year old cat from the shelter.
