Personality>> Ethan is a watcher. He may be quiet and seem uninterested in a group conversation, but the truth is that he's observing and taking in everything. This is probably why he gets on so well with his horse, he can pick up on the subtle cues and know what's going on. Small talk is not his forte, nothing could be more awkward, but once he warms up to somebody, he's decent at carrying on a conversation. Just don't talk about sports. Unless it's soccer, he doesn't know the difference between the first inning and first down. He's blatantly honest and won't spare feelings nor does he have the patience for somebody else who beats around the bush when trying to get to the point. However, his friends know that if they want the truth, Ethan is the guy to talk to. Speaking of his friends, he's the kind of guy who will get up in the middle of the night and drive 100 miles out of the way to help his buddies jump start a car, but don't expect any sympathy when they complain about being tired the next morning. Really, he's not so compassionate towards his own species.
With girls, he is unfailingly polite but this kindness has put him in a front row seat in the friend zone countless times. When it comes to making a move and showing her he wants to be more than friends, he gets nervous and can't seem to do it. With family, he loves them but resents his mother's helicopter style parenting. She calls nearly every day but he only picks up once a week. With school, he's a straight-A student. Always does his homework, always studies and genuinely wants to learn the material. That being said, he is not a teacher's pet. When the instructor asks questions or there's a group discussion, he's more than happy to sit in the back and be silent, letting everybody else do the talking. Part of this stems from his fear of public humiliation, although he may know the material front and back, he doesn't want to give the wrong answer in front of everybody.
He's kind to his friends but may seem cold and distant to people he's never met before. At the end of the day, Ethan is an introvert. Preferring to spend time alone or with his horse than going to parties and getting wasted. Besides, he's a terrible dancer.
Likes>> Soccer, cake, going fast (by car or horse), thunderstorms, figuring out how things work
Dislikes>> Golf, slow drivers, coffee, arrogant people, being late
Fears>> Public embarrassment, his horse having a career-ending injury
Hopes>>To be the very best, like no one ever wasTo compete internationally, earn a Masters degree in Animal Behavior
Secrets>> He shoplifted a pair of sunglasses from a big box store when he was 15 just to see if he could get away with it, he still feels guilty. He also knows about his older sister's eating disorder but hasn't told anybody.
It’s the way I’m feeling I just can’t deny
Appearance>> Ethan is of average height, 5'7", and more buff than the average fellow but nobody would describe him as "muscular". Dirty blonde hair wavers between just long enough to be shaggy and short enough to be well kept. His eyes are light blue but they almost look grey. He should probably shave more often, but like most boys growing their first facial hair, he think a 5 o'clock shadow suits him. Maybe it does. As far as clothing goes, he mostly kicks back in jeans, a t-shirt and an annoyingly ubiquitous black fleece jacket.
Markings>> Nada
But I’ve gotta let it go
Medical History>> When he was 12, he hit the goal post playing soccer and broke his foot but it healed quickly and he was back to playing in a few months. Other a cold once a year, Ethan has been fairly healthy since.
Criminal History>> Was pulled over for a broken headlight once, let go with a warning
Full History>>
Ethan was born in Portland, Oregon and when he was 8 his family moved to a small farm Mt. Vernon, Washington. Growing up, there were always animals around; dogs, house cats, barn cats, sheep, a dairy goat and a number of hamsters, gerbils and mice. His father works for the National Parks Service doing surveys on invasive plant population, namely the Himalayan Blackberry, and his mother works the front desk of a local hospital; his parents have been happily married for 21 years. He has an older sister, Beth, who just started college in Seattle this past fall and a younger sister, Mattie, who is still in middle school.
Ethan got into horses when his older sister succeeded in begging for one for Christmas the year they moved to Washington. The mare lived at the farm and was mainly a pasture ornament. However Beth got tired of taking care of her a few years later, about the same time frame as she got her first boyfriend. Ethan, who had spent countless hours hanging out in the barn, took over her care, moved her to a lesson stable and began learning all he could. As much as he resented his sister for abandoning the mare, he was also grateful. Preferring the company of a horse to a human, and using hanging out in the barn as an excuse to get out from under the thumb of his overbearing (but well meaning) mother, he fell in love with Eventing, particularly the Cross Country aspect. The mare, who was 16 at the time, was nice to learn on but hardly competitive. Meanwhile, Ethan had played soccer since he was 6, then was a linesman for the city parks and rec youth league. Working every chance he could, he soon saved up enough money to buy his own horse last summer to be more competitive in Cross Country. Thirsting for knowledge, he realized that Washington didn't quite have the caliber of instructors he wanted so he packed up and transferred to Blue Ridge.
