The Personality
Personality: Berlin used to be a calm, level-headed horse but having little human contact for a year has made him a bit flighty and independent. He's gotten better these past six months but still has some bad habits. For example, turning him loose in a pasture is easy, catching him is a whole other story and he's a pest about tacking up. Once set up and training, he works brilliantly. Throws his whole body into the game and really puts his heart into his work. It seems like he knows when he's at a show and really lights up around the excitement. He's great around other horses, doesn't mind being turned out with a new herd and adapts to their hierarchy without fuss. In a crowd, other equines can bump against him and he doesn't mind. The bay doesn't care much for people though, even if they have treats he's likely to turn up his nose. He's not mean, just apathetic, however he knows Ethan well enough to trust him now. The farrier and the vet? Not likely. He does love being sprayed with a hose though. In general, Berlin is a nice horse. Not hot-tempered or dull, just the right level of arousal and drive with a few bits of naughtiness thrown in.
Caution Around: flags snapping in the wind
The History
Basic History: Berlin was purchased from a farm in Colorado as a 2 year old eventing prospect by a wealthy man for his teenage daughter and brought up to Washington. The horse was stabled at a barn with a decent trainer who passed on his knowledge to the girl and helped train the horse. The two competed on the local eventing circuit and did quite well in the cross country aspect. However, while out on a ride when Berlin was 6, he was spooked by her cell phone vibrating and the girl fell. Physically she was fine, but mentally she was terrified of riding again. Ultimately she never got back on the horse and the gelding spent the next year hanging out in the pasture. The father saw his talent going to waste and put him up for sale. Ethan, whose old mare was boarded in the same place, had long admired Berlin and had become friends with the horse in the last year while the girl distanced herself from the barn. When Berlin was announced for sale at a reduced rate due to the lack of recent training, Ethan pooled his money from working as a soccer ref and with his parents helping out a bit (ok, a lot), there was just enough to buy him in September. The last 6 months have been spent building up the horse's muscle mass and refining his skills. Now the pair has come to Blue Ridge Riding Academy in order to further their training and become a better team.
