Shine a light through an open door
Full Name>> Christophe Tierry Bailey
Nicknames>> Kit
Age>> November 11th, 1997; 17
Staff or Student>> Student
House>> Red Ribbon House
Gender>> Male
Sexuality>> Bisexual but demi-romantic (he even suspects aromantic)
Face Claim>> Matt Lanter
Turn away 'cause I need you more
Personality>> Kit is a straight guy - not necessarily in his sexuality, but he's the kind of guy that probably inspired the writers to make Captain America back in the day. Honest, straightforward, tactfulat times. He's not all that hard to like: he tends to be friendly and caring, although he's a little wary with strangers. He's not a big fan of bullies, and in fact tends to be the guy that tries to make them stop, even when it's really not a good idea. Self-restraint is something he typically does know, but not always exercises. Kit is the annoying type that knows how to be reckless without taking too many risks - he's had to fight expectations and limitations time and again, so he knows about being the underdog. Frankly, it's a position he relishes... It's a good feeling to prove people wrong.
Only problem is that it sometimes makes him look smug or arrogant. At heart, he isn't, but he's got this smile that'll just make your nails itch. Then again, he can also be rather a charmer, who with a wink and a smile bedazzles people.
Likes>> People who know ASL, freedom, being proven right, hanging out with friends, his dog
Dislikes>> Being ignored, being treated as a dummy, still being underage, the prospect of going fully deaf, English tea
Fears>> Failing miserably, being confined/trapped in a small, dark space while alone, losing his sight
Hopes>> To earn a considerable amount of money, to go on to college
Secrets>>He used to follow the Heartland tv seriesHe once witnessed a horse being drugged by the groom of a successful, famous and well-liked rider... The horse of the rider's rival, that is. And some gestures speak for themselves, which is exactly why he kept quiet.
It’s the way I’m feeling I just can’t deny
Appearance>> Kit is an attractive young man. He stands at 5'10" and weighs in at approx. 165lbs. With dirty blond hair, sea green eyes, pearly white teeth and a dazzling smile, he knows how to charm the ladies, and somehow he fills jeans and a plaid shirt out just as well as he does combat boots and a leather jacket. He carries himself a little stand-offish, though, and even seems a little paranoid at times - typically when he's without dog or hearing aids, and thus reliant on his sight to see what goes on around him. His hair tends to be a little curly when damp, and just long enough to conceal the top of his ears and hearing aids, but overall Kit doesn't care much for how he looks, which adds to his charm. When he's dressed for shows or lessons, though, he makes sure he looks decent: often a polo or button down on top of his riding breeches, boots, gloves and of course a helmet. Always a helmet.
Markings>> No tattoos or piercingsyet, the normal childhood scars of knees too often chafed open etc. and a surgical one on the side of his belly where he had an appendectomy when he was twelve.
But I’ve gotta let it go
Medical History>> Kit was born with Pendred Syndrome, which was diagnosed when he was three years old. Ever since then, he has been losing more and more of his hearing in rather sudden stages. Currently, he's on the edge of severe hearing loss in his left ear and has severe hearing loss in his left, as well as being slightly more prone to dizzy spells and vertigo than normal people his age. Furthermore, he had his appendix removed when he was twelve and broke his shin/ankle when he was fourteen, but that healed without a hitch.
Criminal History>> N/A
Full History>> Kit was born nearly two weeks premature, but strong and healthy enough not to let that be too much of an impediment. It did set a precedent in his life, though - it wasn't all sunshine and roses. His (biological) father had left Kit's mother and older sister, Holly when she was pregnant of Kit, and raising one child isn't easy, let alone two. She had the little farm, though, and elderly neighbours who didn't mind baby-sitting, which meant that her kids were safe while she worked at the local pharmacy in the village.
Kit was a mischievous little kid who tended to get into trouble - chasing the chickens, pulling on the dog's tail, ignoring when people called... And the latter he did frequently. So frequently, in fact, that his mother took him to the doctor. There seemed no easily identifiable reason for it, so more tests were ordered, which in turn led to the conclusion that he had Pendred Syndrome - he'd turn fully deaf eventually, might get problems with his thyroid and could develop some balance issues. All in all, it wasn't all that bad.
From then on, he was taught ASL next to normal, spoken English, as well as introduced to the idea of hearing aids, which he started wearing when he was nearly eight and it was unavoidable. Despite this, he was a happy child that simply didn't know much better, and he was pretty happy at school too. Even if he struggled with some of the subjects, he tended to be tenacious enough to manage, and the kids weren't too bad.
Unfortunately, high school changed all that. In the summer before, an unfortunate car accident hadn't actually hurt him, his sister or his mother much, but whether it was incidental or not, his hearing loss progressed to the point where they decided that perhaps a service dog would be handy - to be a friend, as preparation for the future and simply because it was useful. That's when Asha came into his life, and while she was indeed a friend, old and wise, she also singled him out from his classmates, and couldn't rightly protect him against the sometimes cruel way the other kids teased him. Kit had an outlet though, found a few years earlier when his sister experimented with horse riding, and while she didn't stick to it religiously, he did. So while his grades remained so-so, he self-taught himself the basics of riding before he was awarded lessons in the area, on the old pony they had at the neighbours'. While they started out English at first, with dressage and a little jumping, they soon progressed to western, which he liked just as much. For a while, life was good.
And then chaos happened. Father dearest wanted back in the life of his estranged wife and children, and bought his way in. Kit didn't like the man at all, but the horse he brought was welcomed with open arms. After daddy dearest drunk drove against a bridge and managed to fracture Kit's ankle that way, that idyllic dream was over too. Instead, Kit's mother sued the man, got a divorce and a hefty pay... As well as the papers of the horse, which she put in Kit's name.
He rehabilitated over summer, and got back on his horse in time with school, having been switched to a deaf school. It suited him better, and he finally flourished, even earning a handful of ribbons in the shows he started in. His mother, glad to see him shine, decided to invest the money she got from the settlement, and after some (accidental) luck on the stock market, earned enough to send him to a school he had chatted about before with a certain frequency, despite it being far away.
We found love in a hopeless place
Pet Name>> Merletta - Mer
Registered Name>> N/A
Age>> 3
Gender>> Female
Species>> Canine
Breed>> Flat-coated Retriever
Registry>> N/A
Personality>> Merletta's a devoted, loyal dog with great mother hen instincts. She's a true darling, kind, caring and always concerned for her human pack - though she's a little wary of strangers. She's quite fond of cuddles and attention, but knows when to work, and even when she's not wearing the vest to signal she's working, she'll keep an eye out on Kit, the only loyal owner she's ever known. Her trust has to be earned, as does her obedience, but she's quite a clever girl and not at all afraid to push a little when necessary... Or when bored. She's a rather crafty girl when she wants to be.
Usually, she serves during the day as Kit's ears - she's his morning alarm, the smoke alarm, sirens, nudges him when people call his name, alerts him to ringing door bells or telephones, the oven buzzer etc.
History>> Mer was born at a respectable kennel, but too early and too small. When it was clear she would survive regardless, she was left at an animal shelter, who raised her until she was old enough to be independent, after which they started to train her. Which went surprisingly well - she picked things up rather quick, and thus was decided that Mer was destined for more than being company. They contacted the local service dog organizations, and one reacted rather fast and rather enamored with the black pup. So they took her in, trained her, and when she was old enough coupled her with one of their clients, one Kit Bailey, high school student with an older service dog that was going deaf herselfoh, the irony. The old girl took up training quite well, and after three months the old dog was retired and Mer took up her duties as Kit's ears.
