Hooves pounding beneath her, dirt flying out from behind her. At full gallop the set of three stood in front of the pair. Red white ringed barrels sat in their triangular form in the large arena. The crowd roared as they advanced, the first barrel was rounded without a single touch. Although you couldn't fit one finger between the horse and the barrel. Number two set a few feet in front of them, and getting closer as the seconds ticked by. Bending around it with ease they came down to what would set them apart from the rest. The third barrel had always been, if they had any, a fault of both side of the duo.
Sitting calmly in the saddle, the girl and the equine readied themselves for what was next. Going basically numb the horse rounded the barrel and with her haunches underneath her she made a mad dash back to the gate. From the claps and cheering came an amazed gasps. The announcer said uncertainly, "Well folks it looks as if we have a new champion with a time of..." his voice trailed off and looked at the officials to make sure there wasn't any mistake. "12.1 seconds". Now off course that time wasn't unheard of but it was to this young lady and her horse. The buzzer rang. Wait whoa there's no buzzer in barrel racing.
Shaking herself awake Belle slammed the alarm clock. That had to be her best dream ever and with that she rolled out of bed narrowly avoiding to kick Lily, who lay at the end of the bed. Stretching Belle wandered sleepily over to her wardrobe. Picking out a morning workout outfit she was ready, not for the gym, heck no it was for the barn. Brushing her teeth and hair she was ready to ride.
Standing in the back of his stall with her haunches in the farthest corner of her stall the mare looked at her when she approached. ”Do you wanna go run girl?” At this point she had made up her mind and the QH had no say in the matter. Walking to the tack room Belle grabbed her grooming kit and halter. Moving her into the cross ties the horse shook her head as if to disapprove of the fact that he actually left her stall this early.
Taking her blanket off the eighteen year old folded up the blanket and put it in the tack room. Coming back to Penny she still stood like a human equivalent would sit with a slouch. Taking the curry comb over her two or three times making sure that all of the dirt was unattached to her coat. Next as always a harder bristled brush to remove all of the dust and dirt that had accumulated. Taking a soft brush to get that shine on the mare, finally Belle picked out her hooves and then she was done with the grooming part. Replacing the grooming kit the tack had to come out next.
Sitting the large woven blanket on Penny’s back and then the saddle, the mare made no movements. Another plus to riding this mare in the morning, she had no objections to anything. Tightening the cinch enough for the saddle to stay in place, Belle went onto the next thing, boots. Front and hind boots were in play and then adjusted into place. Unclipping and dropping the cross ties the eighteen year old slipped the reins over the dun’s head and took off her halter. Replacing it with the bridle and bit, they were finally ready to run some barrels. Thankfully she had planned for this and had already set up the barrels last night.
Leading her mount out to the indoor arena Penny just followed like a loyal companion. Opening the gate the fresh smell of the indoor was lovely. Checking and tightening the mare’s cinch one last time Belle vaulted up into the saddle. ”Good girl.” Leaning forward she patted Penny’s neck as the started around the arena.
