Cara stepped back from Gem and picked up the close contact saddle that she had purchased for the mare. She knew the the Brumby didn't belong to her, but she felt that it would be easier to sell the mare on if she came with gear, including a well-fitting saddle. She placed the mare's yellow saddle blanket on her back followed by the saddle and did the girth up, leaving it loose enough so that it didn't cause the mare too much discomfort, yet tight enough so that the saddle wouldn't slip if the mare spooked - not that she spooked easily.
As soon as Gem was ready, Cara led her out to the arena that had been built for the use of the horses at the Equine Clinic. She led the mare in, tightened the girth and pulled the stirrups down, then leading the mare to the mounting block - as she was still working on the mare allowing her to vault - she smoothly mounted the mare and squeezed her forward.
Cara had slowly been working Gem through her paces over the past few months and she was pleased with the way that the pretty mare picked her feet up when she trotted and that she easily transitioned through her gaits. Since she knew that the mare could move well, Cara's latest gameplan was to also work on her agility. She didn't think that Gem would ever make a jumper - as she didn't seem interested at any of the times that she had set some up - but she wondered what she would be like with mounted games. Today the arena was set up with some cones that Cara was planning to use to weave around and she had set up a maze out of trotting poles. She also had another cone that had flags sticking out of it and there was a jump standard with balloons tied to it.
She allowed the mare to walk around the arena on a loose rein, letting the Brumby take in the sights around her. She sat deep and rubbed the pony's neck as the mare shot backwards as a slight breeze caught the balloons and fluttered them. "Easy little one." She whispered as she asked the mare to move forward again. "Good girl." She kept her legs against the mare's sides, but left the reins loose as the mare took a tentative step forward, taking her courage from her rider.
