Kekona - HANSON
<Played by Stern>
Full Name>> Kekona Hanson
Date of Birth>> 12/19/02
Staff or Student>> Student
House>> Green Ribbon House
Face Claim>> Fivel Stewart
Personality>> Growing up in the middle of nowhere can do a lot of interesting things to a person. Horsfeld, where Kekona grew up, is an hour away from Fairbanks by bush plane. This led to her enjoying the city, but being overwhelmed by it in large doses. She's very outgoing and makes friends easily with those who come to her home. She's a good listener and loves hearing about everyone's life story, and living through their experiences. The one thing she absolutely hates is being pushed around, or being spoken down to. Although she'll swallow most insults without response, if you push her too much, or back her into a corner, she will come out swinging - Quite possibly literally. She doesn't really understand the whole clique thing yet, and far prefers being outdoors to being cooped up inside.
River rafting and canoeing
Playing the flute
Being pushed around
That her brother won't like her.
Her mother or father dying
To learn more about her birth parents - The Hansons didn't know much about them.
To learn some English riding - It looks so fancy!
She was the one who caused a fire that burned an empty storage shed - But her parents blamed a tour group and just let it drop, so she never brought it up.
Appearance>> Standing at 5'6", Kekona is about average. Her dark brown hair and dark brown eyes aren't particularly striking, but she still loves them. There's no doubt that she's adopted when you see her with her family, her darker skin tone a good giveaway. She weighs in at about 120 pounds, so is rather slim, although she's more than capable of lugging around bags and bales of hay if necessary. She's more likely to be seen wearing Patagonia or North Face stuff than designer dresses, Most of the time her hair is down, or has a slight embellishment, but nothing very intricate. Makeup is a foreign concept to her.
Markings>> Assorted small scars.
Medical History>> Basic kids stuff, a broken leg at 7 years, broken pinkie at 10 years.
Full History>> Hawaii was a place of magic for Kai Ellison and his girlfriend, Shyla. They had been on vacation there when he proposed, and decided to stay on the islands again afterwards - Shayla's home state anyway, as they had no family to tie them to anywhere else. Their dating period had been short, but they both knew it was right, and so they didn't wait long to get married. A year later, while Lieutenant Kai Ellison had just left for his deployment, Shyla found out that she was pregnant. Luckily, her husband returned right before Mikala was born, and helped in naming the child.
Soon after that, he had to leave again, but not without leaving a second part of him behind. He got the message on a computer screen again, that he was going to be a father to two. Shayla and Kai stayed up for hours, talking about names, but never really settling on anything. A knock on the front door changed their happy life, though. Shayla was informed of Kai's death, and the shock at the news lead to her going into labor a few days before her child was actually due. She unfortunately bled out on the table, leaving her newborn daughter and her almost a year old son orphaned.
The nurse, in the absence of any other name, started calling the baby Kekona, while arrangements were made for her foster placement. Kekona was placed into the Hanson family at only a few days of age, while the state worked tirelessly to find any living relatives - But there were none. The Hanson family, who had fostered many newborns, had been considering moving to Alaska in the near future to assist Mike Hanson's aging father. With some strings pulled, thanks to their long, dedicated service, they were able to adopt young Kekona within six months of her birth. Just before the girl turned one, the family moved to Alaska, where 'Grampa Joe' lived. He had once upon a time run a horse packing and guided tour business, which had since the death of his wife fallen onto the staff to keep going. Mike and Kelsie Hanson, and their new daughter, moved up and took over the facility, and in helping Joe out when he needed it, so that he wouldn't have to go to a care facility.
Once the girl was a little bit older, two or three, she started going on some of the shorter trips with her parents, riding in front of them on a gentle horse, camping out with the groups. When she was around five, she was given her own pony, a calm older gelding who followed nicely on a lead. And that's how Kekona grew up, out in the wilderness, playing with dogs and horses and learning to respect nature. She met all kinds of people who came to do the tours, and enjoyed chatting with everyone, and learning from them. Her schooling, due to the distance between her and any regular school, consisted of homeschooling, with books and paper.
It had never been a secret that she was adopted, but the Hansons had never told Kekona that she had a brother - A brother they hadn't been equipped to take in at the time, and had since lost track of. However, when she was thirteen and a half, on the anniversary of her adoption, a mutual friend of the Hanson and Palakiko families saw photos of both adopted children, and asked about their relation, if any. The Hansons couldn't believe it, but when the lawyers were contacted and the closed adoptions were looked into, it turned out to be true.
Kekona had a brother, one she had never met. Hawaii was slightly far for regular visits, and the families couldn't really afford to fly that often that regularly. However, around the same time, a visitor at the tour facility mentioned a riding school in Kentucky, a well-regarded school that also included an equestrian curriculum. Kekona had been trying to convince her parents to allow her to attend, and the Hansons brought it up to the Palakiko family as a suggestion, that they were considering sending Kekona to the school, since both children had an interest in equestrian pursuits.
And so Kekona ended up at Blue Ridge, eager to meet her brother, and eager to make other new friends.
