Personality>> Strider is a no-nonsense horse. He doesn't really understand how to play yet, although that also means that he doesn't play any tricks. Strider likes to work, he really likes having a job. The gelding is a quick learner, although he can be very stubborn at times.
When Strider is feeling obstinate, it's best not to try to fight with him. He will refuse to move, or worse, throw a fit when you force him to do things your way. Strider has been known to rear before, that's one of his few vices.
Otherwise, he's a very well behaved horse. He has no major vices - he's not mouthy, he doesn't run away, and his barn manners are excellent. Strider can be spooky at times, blowing plastic bags or strange rocks can send him over the bend. If he's really scared, Strider will bolt blindly.
Caution Around>> spooky things
Basic History>> Strider was born on a ranch and raised to be a working horse. He was never given much leeway, and he doesn't really know how to relax and enjoy himself. Strider doesn't really know what treats are, and is just learning that there's more in life than dry grain and hay. He started out as an excellent ranch horse, but after a while the stimulation became too much for Strider. He started refusing to walk on, and would rear if pressed. The more the cowboys tried to "break" him of the habit, the more chaotic Strider got. The previously brave horse became spooky and fearful - poor Strider didn't really know how to be a horse.
Alex found the roan through word of mouth, and offered to buy the stubborn stock horse. The first thing he did when he got Strider was turn the big boy out into a pasture with another group of horses and leave him out there for about a month. After that, the roan's training began. Alex has had Strider for close to 6 months now, and the gelding has made great improvements. In general, he tends to be pretty safe, so Alex doesn't mind using the gelding as a teaching horse as well. Strider takes very well to natural horsemanship and he's slowly learning how to relax and act less like a machine and more like a real horse.
