Personality>> Strong, Stubborn, Clumsy. Three words that describe Ocean perfectly. This made is built like a tank, and could probably pull a mountain if she really wanted to. At least, that’s what Fox tells every one. She can pull a cart like nobody’s business and carry anything you ask of her. There are some issues with the whole pulling a mountain thing, however. If Ocean doesn’t want to do something, she won’t. Fox isn’t ashamed to admit that the pair have stood head to head in the arena, flowering at one another over something Fox wanted and Ocean did not.
Another hindrance to the mountain theory would be that Ocean has a tendency to be very accident prone. It comes from a history of seizures she suffered as a yearling which are now controlled by medication. As a result, though, she trips more often than your typical horse would. She routinely knocks things over and has difficulty completing more delicate tasks. Fox wouldn’t change her for the world though and loves all of her quirks.
Caution Around>> Anything breakable. She will break it at some point.
Signs of a seizure should also be watched for – she stands rock still but her lips, neck and legs twitch almost violently. These are very rare with the medication she takes.
Basic History>> Ocean was bred with a purpose – to further the legacy for the Drum Horse. She was a pampered baby, wanted for nothing and had the best. She was fawned over for her beautiful colouring, and adored for her cheeky personality. When she turned 18 months, however, things changed. She started to have seizures. While controllable, the breeder did not want to further her genes in his breeding program. So it was time to get rid of her. She was advertised for months, a lot of interest but none with the desire to deal with the special needs this mare came with. Her price continued to drop and nothing was done with her. She lost her cheekiness and became more withdrawn, colder.
Fox happened to see her ad in the newspaper one day, bold writing proclaiming RECENTLY REDUCED. A now 4 year old mare, no work done with her, has special needs, need gone this week or going to auction. Fox grabbed his bicycle and raced to the farm that day. He scraped together all the money he had saved from odd jobs and past birthdays and Christmases that he’d managed to stockpile. $153 dollars. The owner accepted, he needed Ocean gone. Fox felt like he’d won the lottery.
Ocean luckily came with a years supply of medication, and Fox's mom's next few boyfriends were rich enough and willing enough to help out when needed. Fox worked constantly worked with her, helping at the yards he boarded her at, and had the mare ready to compete in her first dressage competition after a year. It was a disaster, they came dead last, but Fox had never been prouder! They worked and worked, eventually placing 4th, 3rd, 2nd and the occasional 1st. In this time, Fox had also come across an old, rickety cart that he and his mother’s boyfriend at the time worked on and fixed up. The past year has been devoted to cart breaking Ocean, and Driving was something she excelled at. They continue to do well, and Fox is looking forward to seeing how they do at Blue Ridge.
