Personality>> If Dixie had to be described in a word, she's smart. She's a quick learner and gets bored with constant repetition. To her, most things in life are a game, and boring games are quickly passed over in favor or more fun games. In her stall, she can be a headache with a penchant for trying to open her stall door. However, the problem is usually fixed by putting a latch someplace she can't reach. On the ground, she tends to paw particularly if forced to stand for awhile. But, it's all worth it under saddle. She's sensitive and highly responsive to the aids and possesses good cow sense. Out in the pasture, Dixie is easily offended by other horses cutting her off or invading her space, but kicks and bites are rare.
Caution Around>> Stall doors
Basic History>> Thomas Sween purchased Dixie as a yearling from an auction in Oklahoma. She picked up barrel racing quickly, and Thomas let his son, Kyle, ride her in some of the junior circuits. At the finals, her limitations really came to light. Even though she was fast enough to do well early on in the circuit, in the end, she tended to lag fractions of seconds beneath the leader. Kyle switched to a more competitive racer, and Thomas started teaching Dixie how to do other things. She really took an interest to cutting and proved herself to have good cow sense. Without a good junior cutter, Dixie never competed. Kyle decided to teach her a thing or two about reining, but that was mostly a fun side project when he wasn't racing. Through the grapevine, Natalie's trainer found out that Thomas had an extra racer, and the two exchanged emails for a few weeks before having the horse sent up to Minnesota for Natalie to try. The girl was well suited to Dixie, but the original intention was for Dixie to be an intermediate horse until she was ready for a more dedicated and competitive horse. In the few months when Natalie wasn't leasing Dixie, she was used as a lesson horse. Thomas was mostly happy to see the mare get the attention she needed and had no problem letting Natalie take her to boarding school.
