1: The Birth Cara and I had been planning our sleepover for almost a month, and the day was here! The first things that told us that there was something off was that Rikke was inside her stall, not outside with the rest of the horses. After a bit of an examination by Cara, it seemed that the mare might be pregnant. We were both rather surprised at that, especially since there had been signs, but nothing too obvious. Even more surprisingly, Rikke decided that today would be a wonderful day to give birth. As soon as we figured out that she was close to term, we moved her into the bigger stall, and then we just had to wait. Finally, her waters broke, and we went and watched. Rikke gave birth to a beautiful bay foal without any problems. Fée Rêve, Tanya's sister, seemed healthy, and we were both relieved in thinking that Rikke had done it all on her own. However, when Rikke started pushing again, and we didn't see an afterbirth, but another pair of feet, we were rather surprised. Rikke seemed too tired in her efforts, after giving birth to Fée, so we went into the stall and helped. Cara held Rikke while I pulled Tanya out, then started rubbing her with hay.
After a while, it was obvious that Rikke wasn't going to let the fillies drink without us stepping in. Cara explained to me that the colostrum, the first milk, is extremely important to the foals, so we worked together to get both girls drinking. Once they had done that, we let them rest. I suppose Tanya and Fée will be our newest project, but I have to say, I'm looking forward to it!
The Plan Being We'll be bottle-feeding the fillies until they are weaned, using both Rikke's milk and some supplements. Otherwise, nothing just yet.
