Athena stepped down from the large SUV and gratefully accepted the hug that her foster father gave her. Ok, technically he wasn't her foster father any more now that she was back on campus, but she didn't want to think about that right now, or else she might start bawling.
She had just spent the past three months in complete heaven! When the school year was winding down and Curtis - her social worker - had called her with information about a foster home he'd found for her in Lexington, and she had been more than a little hesitant about it, and the trepidation had only grown as they had left Blue Ridge and driven there - the house she would be staying in was beyond huge.
Her foster parents had been the nicest people though, and they ran a successful eventing barn. So, she had spent the last three months really feeling like she was part of the Steensen family. She rode their horses, took dressage lesson from Lene and jumping lessons from Ansgar and the woman they took turns to coach her in cross country. She had been honoured to compete with a couple of their horses - in novice classes, but she still got to compete.
Now it was all over and she was back at school.
"I'll help you carry your things." Ansgar said as he opened the cargo bay and began to unload her cases.
"If you could take them in the door, I can take them the rest of the way." She said with a smile. She had turned up at their house with a single case and duffle bag full of clothes. After Lene insisted she take the girl shopping, Athena now found that she had more clothes then she could deal with.
Once the bags were inside, Athena stood awkwardly by the vehicle again and squeaked as Ansgar pulled her into another hug, lifting her off the ground. "Thank you so much!" She said as she wraped her arms around his neck and held on for dear life.
"We will see you again, my child." He said as he set her on the ground again and walked around to climb into the vehicle. "You can count on that."
She remained where she was and waved until the vehicle was gone, she then turned and walked up the steps into the House, tears trickling down her cheeks. Grabbing the first of her cases, she began to make her way up the stairs and down to the room that she now shared with Amber.
