Amber signed. "My father has a tendency not to admit it to himself when anything is really wrong. He doesn't mean to. He just can't handle it." If he had meant to then he would have learned his lesson but instead he had just proven his inability to handle a family crisis.
The first time that Athena had told Amber that she would not hesitate in getting help Amber had thought that it sounded kind of nice, although a little scary. This time it sounded, to Amber, more like a threat and Amber realized that Athena knew a lot more about her then she knew about Athena.
Amber didn't like the idea of transferring to another school. Starting a new school was scary and, well it may be a distraction, Amber was pretty sure that the last thing that she needed was anything else fear trigging going on in her life. It was also risky. This school was not perfect but it was the best school that she had ever gone to.
Amber wailed, when Athena called her brother a monster. A monster had been taking over him for years but the sweet, doting and overprotective brother was still there and that's who he really was and that was who Amber wanted to remember him being. Still, she could not deny what he had also been and never would but she didn't really want too.
Amber was looking after Klein for Klein. He did make her think of her brother, but the idea that she might be looking after him for her brother had not occurred to her, but that was not his fault and Amber wasn't going to punish him for that. Everyone who Amber had ever gotten close to, except for Rapunzel and Klein and Athena, had let her down in some way and she was pretty sure that Athena was going too but she knew that the horses wouldn't.
Amber did not know that Athena had a cell phone and she wondered who was calling her. She decided that, when Athena got back, she was going to ask about her wonderful summer. Maybe hearing about it would cheer her up.
Soon after she left, Amber realized that she should probably use this time to call her father. She did not want to call him right now but she knew that she never would. She got out her phone and called him and started to panic because she did not know what she was going to say.
"Amber, are you all right?" he answered. He sounded confused and Amber realized that this was the first time this summer that she had ever called him.
"Daddy, I can't sleep at night. I used to have nightmares but now I can't sleep at all until the morning, when I can sleep in Rapunzel stall but that's it." She had not meant to say all of it at once but it had come pouring out of her.
There was a pause before her father spoke again and Amber heard nothing but concern in his voice. "Why didn't you tell me this before."
"I'm sorry. I didn't want to make you upset."
He sighed. "Please don't be sorry Amber. You have nothing to be sorry for. I'm the once who should be sorry. I'm a horrible father."
Amber wanted to tell him that he wasn't a bad father but she didn't because she knew that that would be a lie. He was a better parent then her mother but she didn't tell him that either.
"Amber I'm going to try to think of something that will help you. I promise."
"Okay Daddy."
"Is there anything else that I should know about."
"Not that I can think of right now."
"Alright. I'll think of something. I promise."
"Goodbye Daddy."
"Goody Amber. I love you."
"I love you too."
