The Stages

Mary felt that Psychology should be one of the core sciences but she was not going to complain about it, but she hoped that it actually would be one day.  She was teaching twice and they were both small class's which, although she was used to big lecture hall class's, was probably a good thing.  Mary had decided to do her first lesson on the stages of development.  She liked the Erikson stages best, finding them more believable, but she knew that they would not exist without the original Freud stages.

Mary greeted each student when they walked threw the door and waited until they were all seated, in the desk which she had arranged in two rows.  She closed the door and turned to the class, ready to begin.  "Welcome to Psychology class everyone.  I will be your instructor and you may call me Ms. Set.  I am glad that you have all chosen to take Psychology class because knowing how people think is very helpful in life.

"Today, we will be learning about the stages of human development.  There are two sets of stages.  The first one was created by Sigmund Freud.  He lived from 1856-1939.  Well he was not the first person to come up with ideas on the mind works, he is often know as the father of Psychology because he devoted his life to the subject and had many good ideas which future Psychologist have improved upon.

"Freud believed that adult problems are results of early life experiences.  He determined that, in youth, people go through five stages of development.  Each stages in associated with certain pleasure felt in the body, so he called this psychosexual development."  She put up a slide that explained each stage and went through each one.  Then she went through the next slide, which explained issues associated with each stage and went through that.  "Before we move on, are there any questions?"

Athena walked toward the psychology classroom, she had decided to swap out dance for this class at the last minute, as she thought that this class would help her later with her plans on becoming a lawyer. She'd done some serious thinking about her future over the summer months and she had decided that she did indeed want to help others, though she was beginning to lean more toward becoming an advocate, rather than a lawyer.

She gave the teacher a smile before she went and sat down at one of the seat in the front row and took out the green folder she had for this class. After pulling out her pencil case, with pen in hand, she turned her attention to the teacher as she began the lesson.

Athena took notes as the woman spoke, wondering if they were going to get any work to do or if they would be spending the entire hour listening to the woman talk. It wasn't that she had a problem with listening, it was just that she was a kinaesthetic learner, rather than an auditory, and she would just rather be doing something - which is why she was taking notes - then sitting there.

Once Mary was assured that everyone was ready to move on, she did.  "The next set of stages was created by Erik Erikson, who lived from 1902-1994.  His first name was originally Homburger, but he changed it to Erik after he immigrated to the US from Germany. 

"Erikson shared Freud's belief that adult problems were often the result of early life experiences, or the failure to master a stage, but he believed that there were eight stages of development.  These stages build upon each other and are each characterized by two conflicting forces."  Like with the Freud stages, she had two slides for the Erikson stages and she went threw each one.  Afterwards she asked again, "any questions?"

Once all questions were taken care of, Mary turned off the slides and gave the class their first assignment.  "Now I would like each of you to write a short essay, of two hundred words or more, either summarizing what you learned today or your thoughts on it, which will be due at the beginning of the next class.  Also, there are stacks of handouts at the front of my desk, which are of the charts shown on the slides, and anyone who wants either of them may come and take them.  Now, you may work on your assignment until the bell rings."  Mary sat down at her desk.  She couldn't help but watch her students, but she tried not to make it obvious.

Athena studied the slides for Freud's stages of development and compared that to what she had learned about Warmbloods during the summer and thought how similar they were with the ages and stages, though this was a class on human psychology, not equine.

She listened intently as the woman went on to talking about Erikson's development stages and again jotted down notes as the woman spoke, studying the new slides that appeared on the board, releasing a breath when the woman explained their assignment and that there were indeed handouts.

Getting to her feet, she walked up to the desk and helped herself to a page of each handout and returned to her desk. She pressed her lips together as she looked at what she held and then raised her hand into the air. "Excuse me, Ms Set?" She said with a smile. "May we do more research into the studies before we write our assignment, or are we only allowed to work off our thoughts of what we have in front of us?" She knew that the question could come off as sounding stupid, but she liked to know all the rules of the game she was playing so there was never a chance of striking out with her first swing.

Gavriila said a greeting to the teacher before sitting next to a girl that she didn't recognize. As the class, and lecture, started Gavriila carefully copied down notes. She abbreviated some things, either in English if she could, or in Hebrew if she couldn't figure out a way to abbreviate it in English. She found Psychology intriguing, something that she found surprising seeing as her father picked it for her.

More slideshows soon followed, along with more notes as she copied down anything she found might be helpful or needed to pay attention to, from the slideshows. She took note of Erik Erikson, his first name before he immigrated, and when he lived to when he died among other things. Once the slideshows were over, an assignment was given out. Gavriila rose from her seat to grab a chart before getting started on the assignment.

Flipping the notebook to a clean sheet of paper, she carefully dated the paper along with the assignment title before thinking on if she should summarize what she learned or if she should offer her thoughts on it. Looking through her notes, she found that she took reasonable notes though she was unsure if she took notes on the right stuff or not. Deciding to give her thoughts on the lecture, she started writing. She read over everything, making sure that it sounded appropriate and that her grammar and spelling were correct. Gavriila would hate to start over if she messed up on her grammar or spelling, but she would if she did mess up.

Gavriila focused on the assignment, only pausing a few times to think of what she had thought of the lecture and slideshows before picking up the pen to write once more.
