Personality>> Lavina is only 31 years old, but is a very determined person. She was determined to work for her riding lessons as a child, and to work hard to be able to earn a spot in competitions. That determination paid off when in 2007, she became the top female dressage rider in the United States. It was a very proud day for her and for her family.
Despite her fame and success, Lavina is a very humble person, almost too humble. She does not think of herself as a celebrity, but merely a woman who grew up in a tiny apartment whose family struggled to make ends meet and to put food on the table. Lavina's tendency to be humble can lead to people thinking they can walk all over her, though she is also quick to prove that notion false.
With a mother who is Italian, Lavina is a bit of a spitfire. This is not to be confused with her being an angry person or short-tempered. No, she only gets angry and goes on the attack if you really upset her or her family. Otherwise, her spitfire tendencies come more from her wit and sharp tongue, her joking ways, than anything else.
Lavina is also one of the most compassionate and caring people you will meet. She does not hesitate to give extra lessons to students who need it, or to open her office if anyone needs to talk. Lavina carries extra non-perishable food and water in the trunk of her car to give to people who seem like they need it. If the academy allowed it, Lavina would have brought home an entire animal shelter full of pets that she rescued. Now, this kindness and compassion goes two ways. People take advantage of that quite often, a thought which she does not like to think about, but one that does occur. People may also take her kindness for smothering, though Lavina doesn't necessarily see it that way.
Wit. It's something Lavina inherited from her father. Her tongue is sharp and her mind quick; most of the time, if you say something, she has a pun for it. Her jokes are witty, and Lavina does enjoy making people laugh. Says it is a real joy to see the crinkles of someone's eyes when they laugh, for it means they are truly joyful.
People sometimes say that Lavina is vain, that she is shallow. Truth is, she is, at least just a little. Blessed with Finnish and Italian beauty, Lavina has the pale skin, dark hair, and green eyes that would make models envious. She does think it is important to spend a bit of time on ones appearance, opting for 50s style lipstick and winged eyeliner when teaching, maybe some additional make up when going out. Lavina doesn't see herself as shallow, however; just someone who is confident in her own skin and enjoys wearing make up and feeling pretty.
Artistic; Lavina loves art. She's terrible at drawing and painting, but it's more the thought of art she enjoys. In her trunk in her room, Lavina has several cases of pencil crayons and a variety of adult coloring books so she can relieve stress. Her main forms of art are singing and dancing, knitting as well.

Hopes>> To instill the love of dressage in her students, to get married and have children, and to eventually conquer her fear of drowning...and to go swimming again.
Secrets>> Almost drowned in a swimming pool when she was 5. Has been terrified of swimming ever since.
Appearance>> At first glance, it's easy to see how people can mistaken Lavina for a model. Standing at 5 foot 7, she is curvy, but slim. Her muscle tone is excellent, coming from having to do manual labor to afford her riding lessons all through her childhood and teenage years. Her father, a Finnish man, gave his daughter his pale complexion. Her mother, an Italian woman, gave Lavina her deep brown, almost black, hair and piercing green eyes.
Her sense of style outside the barn and outside the ring is a bit of an eclectic mix. She has several vintage dresses from the 1950s, as well as lots of cute skirts and blouses. If she is not in the mood for those, Lavina is often found in over-sized sweaters and jeans in the colder months, and shorts and t-shirts in the warmer months. Very rarely will she go all out and go super formal. When she does, Lavina has a gorgeous black dress in her closet with a pair of matching shoes to go with them. This dress has not been worn in several years, however, for she does not like to be that dressed up too often.
For casual riding, Lavina has her breeches and boots, paired with a nice long-sleeved shirt or polo shirt. For shows, it is a completely different story. She has the proper tailcoat, breeches, boots, spurs, gloves, cravat, and top hat required of dressage of her caliber. In all honesty, Lavina prefers the more casual dress, for it is far more comfortable and less stiff than her formal dressage wear.

Medical History>> Normal childhood ailments...chicken pox, tonsils removed, wisdom teeth removed. No broken bones, surprisingly.
Criminal History>> Other than answering questions after nearly drowning, not really. Maybe a speeding ticket or two, but no charges or criminal record.
Full History>> Lavina Rosa Hyland was born in Kerava, Finland, on Valentine's Day, 1984. Her twin brother was born 3 minutes prior. The Hyland family were not rich, but there was always food on the table and clothes to wear. Everything was going well for the family, until Lavina's father was laid off from his job. Being the only breadwinner, they decided to try their luck by emigrating to the United States.
After stopping in New York City, The Hyland family moved south, settling into Atlanta, Georgia. Mr Hyland found work in a factory while his wife took up work as a seamstress. Lavina was 5 years old when the event happened. She had been at a friend's house for a play date. While unsupervised, Lavina had gotten curious about the swimming pool, going in closer to investigate. It was then that she fell in, not knowing how to swim. After a couple minutes of frantic movements, Lavina fell into darkness, waking up in the hospital. From that day forward, she has been afraid of swimming and of pools or other large open bodies of water.
When she was 9, Lavina had gone to see a parade in town, for it was July 4th. There were many different lights and sounds, but what caught the attention of the young girl were the horses. Lavina had never seen such magnificent creatures, and was instantly in love. She begged her parents for riding lessons, but there was not enough money for them. Instead, her parents had approached a stable on the outskirts of town, explaining the situation and asking if their daughter could work in the barn in exchange for lessons. The owner agreed, and that was the start of Lavina's equestrian journey.
For the next several years, Lavina worked in the stable, learning how to ride and care for the horses. She learned all disciplines of English riding, but her heart was set on Dressage. The owner of the stable was a champion of dressage, and was an excellent teacher. Lavina had vowed that she would be at least as good, possibly better, than her mentor one day. It was a goal she worked hard toward.
In 2007, Lavina's hard work paid off, and she won her fifth championship, becoming the top female in dressage in the United States. After that, she worked and competed more, taking a break when her beloved Hanoverian mount, Guitano, passed away in 2010 at the age of 19. It took a while for her heart to heal, but in 2012, her old mentor contacted her, saying he had a present for her. It was a stunning Gypsy Vanner gelding, 4 years old, who Lavina named 'Hakuna Matata,' Kuna for short. She'd spend the next couple years training him in dressage.
Now, about 2 months ago, Lavina noticed Blue Ridge Riding Academy had an open position for a dressge teacher. Deciding that it could be fun, Lavina applied for the job, hoping she'd get it. She ended up getting the job, and it is time for her to start her new adventure here at Blue Ridge.

Personality>> Bunny is a pretty calm little rabbit. He enjoys playing with toys and snuggles with his owner. Around new people, Bunny can be skittish, but if you feed him lettuce, he'll eventually come around and befriend you. Never been tried with other rabbits, so unknown how he would react to another rabbit in the room. Lavina keeps him caged if there will be other animals around, just to be cautious.
History>> Lavina first acquired Bunny when he was about 6 months old. She had been at the pet store intending on buying a bird, but fell in love with the little chocolate fluff ball. She took him home, named him 'Bunny' and has been with Lavina ever since.
