It had been hours since Ben boarded his flight at JFK, and even longer since he'd left his apartment in the city. Sitting in the back of a taxi, he bounced his knee impatiently, mind flying a thousand miles a minute. He'd been cramped up for far too long. The plane ride had been miserable, even if he had gotten the window seat. The elderly woman next to him had shushed if he even made a peep, paying no attention to the wailing baby behind them. And now the taxi driver, who seemed to think that it was his job to take his jolly old time getting to the school. Ben was ready to grab him by the neck and drive himself. They called this a taxi?! Yes, he missed New York already.
Looking around, it was all so...green. All so much like his stable at home, but this green stretched for miles. When his parents had told him he'd be going to boarding school, he'd imagined it would just be like his current college prep school, with uniforms and all. Probably in New York, since they'd most likely just want him out of the house, but perhaps somewhere else. London? Paris? He spoke French fluently enough that he'd be able to get on well. Kentucky had been the last place he'd expected to hear. Now, looking around, he was getting more worried. His taxi had taken forever to arrive, for one thing. And what was he going to do without his chinese takeout and precious New York pizza? Did they even have Chinese food around here?! Life out of his city was looking pretty grim.
Frankly, the entire situation was looking pretty grim on his side of the deal, but out of his parents' sight he may be able to make the best of it. He would, of course, pretend to be miserable when talking to them, in hopes that his mother would bring him back to New York, but things weren't looking good. His father had naturally wanted to place him in the Blue Ribbon House, but he'd won that argument, and was, thank goodness, going to live in White Ribbon House.
Pulling into the driveway of the school, he inched closer to the door, fingers already pressed to the handle. As soon as the cab came to a stop, he flung open the door, almost tripping out, and slapped down the driver's fee and tip, giving a grin and grabbing his bags. He made his way up the walk at a brisk pace, which probably would have been faster had he not been weighed down with bags. He wanted to get to his room quickly and then see Lady, who had arrived earlier. He grinned, imagining how the poor trailer driver probably felt on his way west with all of Lady's stomping. She was probably driving everyone else at this school just as crazy since she didn't have anything to keep her occupied yet.
It took him a few tries to get the door of the office open while balancing all of his stuff, but he finally stumbled in, righting himself quickly and making a much smoother traverse to the desk. The secretary was cute in a sweet sort of way; very country. He gave her a lopsided grin and introduced himself, managing to get his words out in record time while still managing to sound smooth. "Hi. I'm Benjamin Hall, a new student. I'm here to get everything I need." He sort of wished his parents were here to help with the bussinessy side of things, but he would manage. His father had assured him that they wished they could bring him, but no, they have an event that they absolutely needed to attend. Yes, they hadn't thought much of shipping him off to Kentucky.
On the bright side, they had agreed on a car for him. He hadn't needed one in the city, but they'd been easy to convince. Yes, perhaps Blue Ridge wouldn't be the torture that Ben suspected it might be, but it certainly wouldn't be all peaches and cream.
