Rainbow seemed to know it was getting close for racing to start up again. Mycroft had no idea how she knew, perhaps the warmer weather had clued her in, or she might have even recognized the Keenland catalog he'd been reading lately as he looked for races to put her in. The spring meet was coming up, and Mycroft was well aware the filly's fans were itching for her to begin workouts again. Her trainer had visited just yesterday, but he was not quite as eager. After watching her work in Benedict's arena he'd glanced at Mycroft and said, "She looks in good shape for a horse who didn't gallop much this winter, but I don't know. The Pharoah is already retired and siring foals, to me the Queen looks like she's enjoying her new life here. Might consider tapping her out while she's still on top."
She way she acted though, digging holes in her stall as well as bolting around her pasture like the crazed filly he'd always known her to be, he wasn't sure if tapping out was the right answer. Today he was attempting to get some of that fire out of her, perhaps a few laps around the round pen would ease her. As they entered he led her to the middle before turning her loose. She stood for a moment, her head left lofty as she observed a pair of riders and their horses headed to class. All it took was for Mycroft to kiss to her before she was tossing her head and trotting around the circle. Round and round, Mycroft watched her as she seemed to float over the ground, each step placed with purpose. He couldn't help but marvel at her for a moment, she truly was an amazing young horse.
With another kiss she moved into a canter, tossing up her heels once or twice before settling into her stride. Mycroft didn't move, and he didn't have to. Rainbow was more than content to canter circles around him all day. After several minutes he held out his hand, taking a step forward to slow the filly down. She pricked her ears at him, but obeyed and slowed to a trot and then a walk. He smiled at her knowingly, resting his hand on her forehead before sending her off in the other direction to do it all again, round and round endlessly. There was no doubt to Mycroft, she needed to go back to the racetrack, and soon.
