Lee looked at the cat that had been dropped off earlier that morning, ready for surgery. His owner had had to commute to work through a change in schedule, and since Lee had nowhere to be anyway for the day, he'd had no issue stopping by the vet clinic early to take the carrier that was handed to him and settled the old tom into one of the cages that the clinic had. However, the surgery would wait until he had time.
First, of course, was letting Kayi out into the yard. He then started walking around the clinic, making sure that the machines that he had run overnight had finished. After folding and sorting the laundry, he headed up to the waiting room, where he started up the computer and settled in to type in the information for their next patient as he waited for his assistant-slash-vet-student to show up.
Since it was break, they had settled on the boy coming in a few days in the mornings, the shifts he usually didn't get to see, when most of the surgeries were done. But then, there had been no reason to call the boy out of bed for the early arrival of their patient. It hadn't been very exciting, not like an emergency surgery, where Lee might have considered letting Jackson know, although it was up to the boy if he wanted to come out for the pre-breakfast work... Maybe he would ask how his vet student felt about that before he just woke him up.

A few days during the week Jackson had been going into the vet clinic during the break in the morning. With school the clinic had to wait until after school when he didn’t have classes. It was nice to have something to do during break; he usually ended up lying in bed until twelve when he wasn’t at the academy. Some of his classmates had gone home for the break but not him. Phillip and Jackson had decided to stay, though it was more for Jackson’s sake than Phillip’s.
Out of the Red Ribbon House and to the vet clinic didn’t take very long and so Jackson walked in the doors to see Dr. Hastin, ”Morning Dr. Hastin, so what are we doing today?” Not seeing Kayi anywhere around, he figured that Lee must have let her out in the yard for her morning run, or waddle, or whatever she decided to do during that time.
Jackson waited for the answer. He was kind of excited to do something today. He had his own plans to go and work with the three equines that he was assigned. Fore needed to be worked and bonds could never be strong enough, especially with a pregnant mare and a filly.

Lee glanced up as he heard the door open, smiling at Jackson, "Good morning, Jackson." He paused to look back at the computer, saving the file he'd been working on, then returned his attention to his vet student, "Leonard's owner dropped him off a bit early, so he's already in the back. He has two tumors that we're going to be removing, one on his flank and the other on his shoulder." He rose from the chair, gesturing to Jackson to follow as he continued to talk about the cat, "He's an eight-year-old tom, and he's going to be a handful to bring down, I've vaccinated him before." Talk about a cat that didn't like needles!
As they reached the row of cat cages, Lee pointed out the tabby, then asked, "Would you mind bringing him into the surgery room and then weighing him? You might want to use the gloves, just to be on the safe side." The cat wasn't stupid, it knew the place it was in.
Once he had the cat in the room, Lee recorded his weight before turning to draw up the appropriate amount of anesthetic. "I will find a cat for you to stick, but I don't think Phillip would like it very much if you ended up scratched, so you get to have the protective equipment this time around." He chuckled, then waited until the cat was firmly secured before grabbing his scruff in one hand, and injecting the fluid as quickly as possible with the other, "Let him go."

Listening to what Dr. Hastin had to say one question came to mind. ”Are they cancerous or fatty?” Of course he was excited to watch and assist but he figured any question was a good question, especially if it pertained to the surgery at hand. Following the vet to the back he listened to the warning and he would definitely heed it.
He had helped with giving anesthesia and all were somewhat difficult, especially cats, with their claws and teeth and all. They weren’t fans of being poked and prodded. Nodding to what the man had said Jackson turned on a heel and grabbed some gloves before heading to get Leonard.
The cat was indeed large and he looked as though he would hate everyone, but a vet’s office did that to animals. ”Come along Leonard.” Jackson picked him up by the scruff of his neck but also supported him with his other arm. Returning to the surgery room Jackson sat him on the scale and told Dr. Hastin so he could record it.
Jackson was perfectly fine with just watching the anesthetic go in, definitely in this situation. Dr. Hastin being right when he said about Phillip, not that he wouldn’t be able to be a vet student anymore but it would push Phillip in that direction.
Securing the cat in his arms, he watched Lee pinched the skin and gave a subQ injection. Knowing that the anesthetic would take a bit to affect the large cat Jackson kept an eye on him making sure he didn’t go and hide under some equipment where they couldn’t reach him. Soon enough it set in and they were ready to prep him.

Leander smiled at the boy's question, "You're learning. They are only fatty, but his owner wanted them removed nonetheless. One of them, on his shoulder, has been scraped open at least once that I've seen, and a couple more by the owner's report. It also seems like it might be deep enough to be bothering the muscle. The second one, we're just removing because we're removing the one on his shoulder." There was no reason to let it hang around if they had to put the cat under anyway, "He's just about at the edge of what I'd consider it reasonable to operate, so that's the other reason it's getting done now."
Finally, the cat was out, and Lee smiled, "How do you feel about trying your hand at shaving?" He had plugged the clippers in already, and once the cat was on the table, held them out to Jackson, "You can take it slowly, if you're worried, just a piece at a time." He reached out to shift the cat into a position that would work in Jackson's favor, then started running his finger along a square area, "You're going to want to clear about this area here, and then here," a point further down on the shoulder. "No need for it to be perfectly square, you'll eventually get a feel for it."
