Erik groaned as he dragged the last of the bean bags into the classroom, tossing them in a rather haphazard circle. In a lot of ways he felt a bit peeved, in others he was almost amused. A little birdy had told him that the thing about his class that upset his students the most, was the loss of the beanbags used by his predecessor. Seriously? Of all things to comment on, the beanbags were what they took away from his class? He sighed, fine, whatever. Beanbags it is!
Plopping himself in a deep red beanbag, he lounged and waited for his class to come in. He hoped the return of their precious beanbags would make them happy, and get them focused on what they were going to be doing today. He hoped today's little activity would entertain them at least, even the people were were obviously just here because they needed another elective and just did a pen-drop on the sheet. When the bell rang he sat up, and engaged his class. "Good morning, for those of you who are new, my name is Mr. Destler but just Erik is fine. For those of you who are old, take notice I have returned your precious beanbags, your welcome," he announced with a smirk.
Once he had their attention he got right into it, "Today we're going to do a little activity involving improvisation. Improv is a skill that any great actor or actress must master, and the key to it all is simply using your imagination."
He reached behind his beanbag, pulling out a plain wicker basket. "Here we have a plain basket. We're going to pass this basket around, and I want you to use your imaginations and turn this basket into something else. Thing is, you cannot repeat any objects. So, I'll start by taking the easiest one, which should make you all think."
Taking the basket, he turned it upsidedown and set it on his head, "Voila! It is a hat!" Taking it off, he passed it to the student sitting to his right and silently prayed they wouldn't just declare this activity stupid and not even try.
