If looks could kill, the two adults in the front of the SUV would have been gone a long time ago. Eira kept a glare facing forward the entire trip from the airport, occasionally flashing a venomous smile at the driver. Her mother had insisted on taking her kids to their new school, instead of letting them just say goodbye back at home. It wasn't that Eira hated her mother or that she wasn't going to miss her, but her mother hadn't even hesitated when she began flaunting her boyfriend. Even worse, he was the one she had cheated on Maks with. Every now and then though, she looked over at her brother and gave him a grin. He was more green in the face than most of the grass they passed and it made her feel terrible for being so grouchy.
When they pulled up, she couldn't help but perk up. Although her life hadn't been particularly long, she was more excited today than she could ever remember being, even if she wouldn't get to see her horse until tomorrow. She drummed her fingers against the door anxiously, unbuckling well before they stopped.
After not-so-subtly rushing her brother, Eira practically skipped to the office. Her mother had waited just outside by the car and let them check themselves in after some protest about independence from Eira. She swung the door open, dragging her hand along it just long enough for Wes to catch up and grab it for himself. A smile plastered across her face as she walked up to the desk. "Hi, Eira and Wes Gould checking in." She gestured to her brother vaguely, who had taken a spot beside her as she spoke.
